Thomas E. Serena, MD, FACS
Dr. Thomas E. Serena, MD, FACS, Founder and Medical Director of the Penn North Centers For Advanced Wound Care is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The College of William and Mary and Penn State Medical School. He completed his residency in Surgery at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center with training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Southern Illinois University. He is a Professor at Gannon University in Erie Pennsylvania where his research team focuses on the latest developments in wound healing and has developed an acute wound-healing
model. To date, he has opened and operates wound care centers across the US. He is currently establishing Hyperbaric Oxygen Centers in support of the wound care centers. Dr. Serena has been the lead or principal investigator in over thirty clinical trials, including testing blood platelets, topical and parenteral antibiotics and bi-layered cell therapy, the Human Genome Sciences sponsored trial of new growth factors and the most recent Bioengineered skin trial. As a result of the overwhelming demand for his services as a research scientist, he founded the NewBridge Medical Research Corporation. He is recognized internationally as an expert in the field of wound healing, having published more than seventy papers and given over one-hundred presentations around the world. In 2003, he was elected to the Board of Directors of The Wound Healing Society, the nation’s leading scientific society dedicated to wound healing. He is chairman of the Clinical Trials Course for the Wound Healing Society. Dr. Serena is directly responsible for writing the Standards of Care used across the United States for the treatment and prevention of chronic wounds.
